Modern day magical girl is a self portrait piece that focuses on the personal dynamic between fashion and its wearer. Since the age of 12, I've been experimenting with alternative clothing, deep diving into the mesmerising world of J-fashion where I found a voice and a world to build up around myself.
The essence of Harajuku, adorned with accessories galore, is something that I have equipped, refined and polished like colourful armour throughout my teens to rebel against expectations placed upon me by others. The art of dressing has become a comfort and a way in which I connect better with myself as I work through past traumas. Almost like a video game character, I switch up my avatar to reflect who I want to be.
I applied accessories from my own wardrobe onto the canvas to bring my self portrait to life in the same way my fashion has defined me, the physicality accentuates the duality of clothes being both a literal and emotional guard.
